Wordplay is a lighthearted film about people who solve crossword puzzles, their lives and the annual tournament they compete in. It shows the evolution of the New York Times crossword puzzle and briefly goes into a short description on Will Shortz, the editor of the famous NY Times crossword. Did you know he has the only Enigmatology degree in the world? In a lively manner, this documentary depicts how the puzzles are created, shows people solving puzzles, depicts some of the participants in the annual Crossword Tournament, organized and hosted by Shortz, and attempts to provide a sketch of the people who are so interested in crossword puzzles. If you have ever done a Times puzzle check this documentary out. These guys can finish a Saturday puzzle in less than 10 minutes. Amazing!
Movie Review: Layer Cake
by tandurq on Nov.18, 2006, under Movie Reviews
Layer Cake is about a successful cocaine dealer who has earned a respected place among England’s Mafia elite and plans an early retirement from the business. However, his big boss Jimmy hands down a tough assignment: find the missing daughter of Jimmy’s old pal Edward, a powerful construction business player and gossip papers socialite. Complicating matters are two million pounds’ worth of ecstasy, a brutal neo-Nazi sect and a whole series of double crossings. The title “Layer Cake” refers to the layers or levels the dealer has to go through as he painstakingly plots his own escape. What is revealed is a modern underworld where the rules have changed. Not knowing who he can trust, he has to use all his ’savvy’, ‘telling’ and skills which make him one of the best, to escape his own. Pretty good movie with real plot twists. Its very similar to Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. 3 1/2 stars and its got the new James Bond (Daniel Craig)
Movie Review: Road to Guantanamo
by tandurq on Nov.15, 2006, under Movie Reviews
In 2001, four Pakistani Britons travel to Pakistan for a wedding and in a urge of idealism, decide to see the situation of war torn Afganistan which is being bombed by the American forces in retaliation for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Once there they are captured by Northern Alliance fighters. They are then handed over to American forces who transport them to the prison camps at the Guantanamo Bay base in Cuba. What follows is three years of relentless imprisonment, interrogations and torture to make them submit to blatantly wrong confessions to being terrorists. In the midst of this abuse, the three struggle to keep their spirits up in that face of this grave injustice. It sparks great criticism of the United States, its dictatorship and its violation of International Human Rights. I recommend seeing this documentary and rate it 4 Stars.
